The Office for Science and Technology of the Consulate General of France in Chicago along with Purdue University co-organized a symposium entitled «Developing Partnerships for Sustainable Water management and Agriculture in the context of climate and global change». This event gathered nearly almost 130 international experts, 50 of whom were French, in Purdue’s campus.

The conference was sponsored by the NSF (National Science Foundation) and the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development). Twenty three french institutions and companies were represented at this event (INRA1, INPT2, IAMM3, IRD4, ONEMA5, CNRS6, Veolia Water, etc.). There were also twenty six American institutions and companies represented (Argonne National Laboratory, Iowa State University, Michigan State University, Northwestern, University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign, USDA-ARS7, Dow AgroSciences, etc.) as well as eight international institutions (UNESCO-IHE8, Technical University of Catalonia, National Research Center, Cairo, Egypt, etc.).

The objective of the symposium was to establish state of the art research in these fields in order to identify potential joint projects. The scientists were able to exchange their ideas during the three following thematic round-tables :

1.Water Supply and Water Quality
2.Multi-scale Water and Land-use Modeling in Support for Better Decision Making
3.Innovation in Education and Technology Transfer

With the idea of fostering transatlantic partnerships, the discussions allowed to formalize 15 pilot-studies in various topics such as water treatment, soil-water interactions modeling, etc. The discussions also led to the emergence of ten interdisciplinary proposals related to transverse issues : desalination technologies, improvement of irrigation techniques, etc. The next steps to take are supporting the dynamic introduced (stimulation of the network, perennial funding of the identified joint projects, etc) and organizing a follow-up meeting in France in order to assess the actions initiated.
