Long stay visa for scientists, researchers or university teachers

1- Long stay visas and residence permit

  • Holders of a long stay visa as scientists, researchers or university teachers are now allowed to reside in France for up to 12 months according to the validity of their visa. They will no longer be required to obtain a residence permit ("carte de séjour") from the French local authorities ("Préfecture") as long as their visa is valid.
  • However, they will have to register to the French Office of Immigration and Integration (OFII)->www.ofii.fr


  • Family members will be issued a visa only valid to allow entry into the French territory (3 months validity). They will need, in addition to the visa, to apply for a residence permit ("carte de séjour") within two months of entry into France.

2- Do I need a visa ?

Yes except if you are a citizen of Switzerland, Andorra, Vatican, San Marino, Monaco or of the European Economic Area :

Also special rules apply for family members of an European Union citizen.

3- How to make an appointment ?

For security reasons, all applicants, except children under the age of 6, have to appear personally at the Consulate General of France in Chicago.

Please bear in mind that applications cannot be processed more than 3 months before your departure date.

The visa section is open to the public on an appointment basis, with no walk-ins allowed.

IF YOU CANNOT PRINT YOUR CONFIRMATION RECEIPT IT IS NOT A PROBLEM. Simply show up on the date and time of your appointment .

No appointment can be made by phone or by e-mailing us. If you are not able to attend, please free a slot by canceling your appointment.


Make sure you bring all the required documents when coming to the Consulate General.

4- Processing time

Processing time may take about 1 month.

Note that if the institution/organization hosting you in France is not amongst the ones allowed to issue a "Protocole / Convention d’Accueil", you will be required to apply for a regular Work Visa


5- Requirements

  1. Original passport valid for at least three months after your return to the US +1 photocopy of the 1st pages. Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years ago, be valid for at least three months after your return to the US and have at least 2 blank visas pages left.

  2. Processing fee

    For Fulbright recipients the processing fee will be waived given you provide the award letter

  3. One application form (click here for the English version) filled out completely and signed by the applicant.

  4. One US passport size photo on a white background with no glasses and no hat and please do not smile

  5. Original "Protocole / Convention d’accueil" (equivalent of a work contract) provided and stamped by your host in France and stamped by the Préfecture + ONE COPY. If the institution/organization hosting you in France is not amongst the ones allowed to issue a "Protocole d’Accueil", you will be required to apply for a regular Work Visa

  6. One residence form duly filled out (upper part only) [*]

  7. If you are not a US citizen: residency card or visa to the United States, I-20, IAP66, advanced parole or any other pertinent documents from INS + ONE COPY.

  8. A self-addressed prepaid EXPRESS MAIL envelope from the US POST OFFICE ONLY - NO FEDEX / UPS / AIRBORNE EXPRESS accepted.You may use one envelope per family if you buy `flat rate`

    Please do NOT stick the mailing label on the envelope and fill out as follows :

6- Requirements for spouses and children

  1. Passport valid for at least three months after your return to the US. Make sure your passport has blank pages left to affix the visa + 1 copy

  2. Processing fee

  3. One application form (click here for the English version) filled out completely and signed by the applicant.

  4. One US passport size photo on a white background with no glasses and no hat and please do not smile

  5. Marriage Licence for the spouse + 1 copy / Birth Certificate for the Children + 1 copy

  6. If you are not a US citizen: residency card or valid visa to the United States, I-20, IAP66, advanced parole or any other pertinent documents from INS showing that you may reenter the U.S. +1 photocopy.

  7. A self-addressed prepaid EXPRESS MAIL envelope from the US POST OFFICE ONLY - NO FEDEX / UPS / AIRBORNE EXPRESS accepted.

    Please do NOT stick the mailing label on the envelope and fill out as follows :

7- Important information

  • The consular administration has full authority to evaluate and request more documents than those submitted by the applicant.

  • Please be aware that submitting the aforementioned documents does not guarantee the approval of the visa.

  • Please note that holders of visas are still subject to immigration control upon first entry into France. The visa itself does not grant the right to enter France.
