FRENCH THEORY IN TRANSLATION
On the occasion of the English-language publication of two volumes La bête et le souverain (The Beast and the Sovereign Vol. 1 & 2) of Jacques Derrida’s Seminars by the University of Chicago Press, the Cultural Service of the Consulate General of France in Chicago, the Alliance Française of Chicago, DePaul University, The University of Chicago, and The France Chicago Center, organize on November 3-5, 2011, a conference entitled : "French Theory in Translation: The Question of the Archive".
The main program of the conference is:
November 3rd - Film and presentation – Alliance Française of Chicago
A screening of D’ailleurs Derrida (Derrida’s Elsewhere) by Safaa Fathy (1999, France) followed by a presentation of The Seminars by the translators team of the Derrida Seminars Translation Project.
November 4th – Two Round-Tables : Reading and Translating Derrida’s Seminars - DePaul University
The roundtables focus on and discuss the already published seminar entitled La bête et le souverain (The Beast and the Sovereign Vol. 1 & 2) and the upcoming publication of the seminar La peine de mort (The Death Penalty).
November 5th, 2011 - French Theory and the Archives: Foucault, Derrida, & Ricœur – University of Chicago
It will address the broad question of archives in France, specially those of Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, and Paul Ricœur.
All lectures are in English. Admission is free and open to the public.
